Jacob was born in what is now the Town of Oppenheim, Fulton County, NY. However, Fulton County was not separated from Montgomery County until 1838, so Oppenheim was in Montgomery County while Jacob lived there.
In 1798, Jacob crossed to the west bank of the East Canada Creek, (the dividing line between Montgomery and Herkimer counties) and built a sawmill and later a gristmill on lot 1 of the Snell-Zimmerman patent in the town of Manheim. It was part of the estate that his wife Catharine had inherited from her father.
It is not known when Jacob moved his family to the west bank where his mills were located, but that probably took place soon after 1798. Therefore, the birthplace of members of the Yoran family have been listed variously as Oppenheim, Montgomery County; Oppenheim, Fulton County, and Manheim, Herkimer County.
Jacob married Catharine Snell, daughter of Joseph F. Snell and Maria Sophia Lepper, on 3 May 1791. (Catharine Snell was born on 9 Sep 1772 in Manheim, Herkimer, New York, United States, died on 12 Jun 1807 in Manheim, Herkimer, New York, United States and was buried in Snells Bush, Manheim, Herkimer, New York.)
